Non-Instructional PPA: AA - Athletics (ATH) PPA Review Narrative2021 - 2022 GENERALName and Title of ManagerDan Teresa - Dean of AthleticsName and Title of Contributor 1Joanne Venegas - Administrative Assistant 1Name and Title of Contributor 2Cristina Westfall - Program Assistant 1Name and Title of Contributor 3NAName and Title of Contributor 4NADate Submitted to VP03/24/2022STUDENT SUCCESSHow does your service/office/non-instructional program focus on students? The Kinesiology/Health Education/Athletic Department programs serve approximately 300 student-athletes, 200 students each semester who audit activity classes, and over 2,000 students each semester in our Kinesiology course offerings. The Kinesiology/Athletics office provides support for students who are taking Kinesiology classes or are participating in our athletics program. On the Kinesiology side we ensure that the courses offered are the ones the students need and that they are available at the times that they need them. The office also makes sure that the facilities are more than adequate and well maintained. On the athletics side, the office is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the athletic programs (facilities, supplies, eligibility, transportation, etc.) and that the sports offerings meet the needs of the community/student athletes. How does your service/office/non-instructional program support students in: a. Completing their program/educational goal? b. Completing their program on time? Is there more that it can do?To aid our student-athletes in completing their program/education goal and their program on time, we make sure they have one on one meetings with sports counselors at least twice a semester to work on their ed plans, and ask questions to sport counselors. It is also mandatory that each student-athlete spends 3 hours a week in the Panther Learning Labs. The student-athletes learn about all the services and resources available to them throughout the year during our Student Introduction night, as well as the Welcome Back BBQ that is held each fall for all student-athletes. Based on our numbers from the college and the state, our students are completing the Kinesiology program and doing it in a better than average time. Our athletes also graduate at a higher rate and in less time than the average students at the institution. We support the general students by making sure we offer the right classes at the right times to meet their needs. We hope that the program mapping, that was done by our faculty as part of the Guided Pathways process, will further improve the number of graduates and the time they needed to complete.Based on the mission of your service/office/non-instructional program, describe how you offer 'equitable services' to different student groups at Ĵý?Our programs provide opportunities for traditionally underserved populations to complete their education at Hartnell and compete with our athletic teams in order to develop opportunities to transfer to 4-year institutions. A majority of our students will also get financial assistance based on their athletic abilities. All student-athletes are offered equal opportunities to participate in team activities. The department in partnership with the Ĵý Foundation offers scholarship opportunities, and all student-athletes are encourage to apply to scholarship opportunities. One prestigious scholarship is the Bill Elliott Memorial Scholarship where one female and one male student-athlete transferring to 4 year institution can receive up to $1,000 scholarship. All Ĵý students receive free admission to any home game. We encourage student to attend athletics games, and participate in physical education classes. All services are also offered in a way that they are flexible timing wise and available to all.Describe the services that your program/service/office has offered to the Disproportionately Impacted (DI) student groups outlined in the 2020-21AY Summary of the Strategic Plan, which includes: American Indian/Alaskan Native, Foster Youth, Hawaiian /Pacific Islander, and/or Some other race.Even though we do not offer and special programs or services that target the DI groups, we do have Hawaiian/Pacific Islander students in our athletic programs. We do not know if any of our students are "foster youth." We do not provide any "special" services, but we will start checking in with them more in case they have special needs. Are there any Disproportionately Impacted (DI) groups that are currently NOT being served by your program/office/service? What resources would you need to better serve these student groups? We do not have any student athletes who identify as American Indian/Alaskan Native. We do not know if any of our students are foster youth. We need to know we are working with a foster youth in order to rearrange our services to their needs. Please describe any equity gaps that were not identified and/or discussed in the questions above, based on your experiences at Hartnell. The largest gap that we see is with students of color, predominatley black and latino, who are going to school full time, working full time, and are also student athletes. These students struggle in the classroom because they cannot put enough time into their studies.SERVICE AREA OUTCOMESPlease describe any meaningful outcomes that have been achieved from the SAOs outlined in the prior academic year. The SOA that we assessed last year was on our graduation rates. For this SAO we exceeded our expectations. Because of this, we will stay the course on what we are doing. The last year was tough because of the backlog of athletes at the 4-year institutions due to Covid 19. We were informed earlier this Spring that we will be losing one of our adjunct sports counselors. With how important they are in this process, we will need to find a replacement for this position.Did the activities from the prior academic year, and any subsequent dialog lead to significant change in the effectiveness and/or efficiency of this service/office/non-instructional program during the current academic year? Please describe any resources that may help/have helped you overcome these challenges.No. We were able to maintain our high standards for what we assessed. What factors and/or challenges have influenced the effectiveness of your service/office/non-instructional program (e.g. staffing, equipment, facilities, etc.) over the last three academic years? The biggest factor influencing our deprtment has been working around the Covid-19 pandemic. Starting in Spring of 2020 when our Spring athletic seasons were cancelled, through Fall 2020 when we were only able to meet briefly in person at the end of the semester (and only for athletics), to Spring 2021 when only 2 of the Spring sports were only able to complete a limited game schedule, were were able to resume all athletic activity in Fall 2021. Getting back onto the field for athletics was managed by our athletic trainers who coordinated with the coaches and athletes about the rules we needed to follow, testing requirements, vaccine requirements, and the overall changes that we had to adapt to in order to compete again. The pandemic also influenced our activity classes under PEAC. We were able to switch some courses to on-line, but there were many that did not translate well and were not offered. For Fall of 2021 and Spring of 2022 we have tried to offer the PEAC classes in person, but our enrollments have not recovered to pre-pandemic levels. On the positive side, we have been able to offer services on-line which expands the population that we can reach.SIGN OFF / APPROVALI have certified that the information above is complete and is represented accurately.
