Non-Instructional PPA: AA - Science and Math Institute (SMI) PPA Review Narrative2021 - 2022 GENERALName and Title of ManagerJoel Thompson, Director of SMIName and Title of Contributor 1Anely Meneses, Program AssistantName and Title of Contributor 2N/AName and Title of Contributor 3N/AName and Title of Contributor 4N/ADate Submitted to VP03/23/2022STUDENT SUCCESSHow does your service/office/non-instructional program focus on students? The Science and Math Institute (SMI) focuses on the success of Hartnell STEM students in the following four strategic areas: 1. Completing their degree or certificate goals, 2. Increasing their completion efficiency (i.e., decreasing the time to completion or the number of units taken), 3. Increasing the STEM transfer rate to 4-year institutions, and 4) improving their prospects for employment in the future. SMI does this through the Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) program and the STEM Internships program. Both of these program goals are to help our STEM students in these four strategic focus areas. MESA offers various forms of academic support through tutoring, study groups, counseling, book and calculator loans, etc. The STEM Internship Program offers hands-on work experience and career development opportunities for our students. How does your service/office/non-instructional program support students in: a. Completing their program/educational goal? b. Completing their program on time? Is there more that it can do?Through MESA we provide a variety of support for students including textbook and calculator loans, resource help like tutoring and cohort study sessions in the MESA Center. Currently tutoring and study sessions are both online and in person. STEM Teachers Pathway and CSin3 are cohort programs with targeted help for student success and professional development. The STEM Internship Program allow students to develop their skills and interest with hands-on relevant professional experiences. We are continuing to try to provide these opportunities to more students each year.Based on the mission of your service/office/non-instructional program, describe how you offer 'equitable services' to different student groups at ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½?SMI overall serves all STEM students at Hartnell, whereas the MESA program focuses on and serves first generation college students from under representative backgrounds in STEM. MESA's goals are to help these under representative STEM students succeed in their major and to help them transfer to a 4-year University program.  Describe the services that your program/service/office has offered to the Disproportionately Impacted (DI) student groups outlined in the 2020-21AY Summary of the Strategic Plan, which includes: American Indian/Alaskan Native, Foster Youth, Hawaiian /Pacific Islander, and/or Some other race. The MESA program provides all of it's support services mentioned above to the DI student groups with STEM majors. Are there any Disproportionately Impacted (DI) groups that are currently NOT being served by your program/office/service? What resources would you need to better serve these student groups? Not that we know of? All DI groups are eligible for our services. Please describe any equity gaps that were not identified and/or discussed in the questions above, based on your experiences at Hartnell.N/ASERVICE AREA OUTCOMESPlease describe any meaningful outcomes that have been achieved from the SAOs outlined in the prior academic year. This is the first year for SAO's for the Science Math Institute (SMI) as there were no previous SAO's outlined. We continue to work to have our STEM students use our resources and to attend our workshops, community presentations and events. Last year all SMI events were held virtually due to the Covid pandemic. Our STEM internship opportunities did increase over the first year of the pandemic as we had 40 regular internship’s and 140 micro-internships last year. All MESA events were held virtually last year and out of 156 MESA member we have 62 members (or 40%) that were active and attended our MESA sponsored events online.Did the activities from the prior academic year, and any subsequent dialog lead to significant change in the effectiveness and/or efficiency of this service/office/non-instructional program during the current academic year? Please describe any resources that may help/have helped you overcome these challenges. This year as a result of many students being back on campus and taking classes in-person, we are hosting a combination of events with some being in-person and some virtually to accommodate various student preferences as best we can. It seems many students are still not comfortable in attending in-person events. We have the resources we need, but the covid pandemic is still making it hard to connect with the students in-person.What factors and/or challenges have influenced the effectiveness of your service/office/non-instructional program (e.g. staffing, equipment, facilities, etc.) over the last three academic years? The main factor still affecting our success is the pandemic and getting students to participate more fully in-person, similar to pre-pandemic levels. We are going to have to teach our newer students about what we offer and to use our resources more effectively going forward. Since we are mainly a 2-year program the newer students came to us during the pandemic where everything has always been online from classes to support services. We need to educate them about the benefits of taking classes and using our support services in-person. That in-person participation will lead to more positive experiences or higher success for them as we all try to fully return to being fully in-person.SIGN OFF / APPROVALI have certified that the information above is complete and is represented accurately.
